The Team

The Cardiovascular Research Support Unit (Gabinete de Apoio à Investigação Cardiovascular - GAIC), has been created in 2012 at the Association for Research and Development of the Faculty of Medicine, a public benefit association that promotes biomedical research at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (FMUL).

Scientific Director

Fausto J. Pinto, MD, PhD

Professor Fausto Pinto graduated at Lisbon University Medical School in 1984. He did his Cardiology internship at Santa Maria University Hospital - CHLN E.P.E., and at Stanford University Medical School (CA, USA), where he was a Research Fellow and then Clinical Attending in the Echocardiography Laboratory. He was also awarded with an Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at the same institution.

He is currently Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (Lisbon, Portugal), Full Professor of Cardiology, and Head of the Cardiology Department and of the Heart and Vessels Department of Santa Maria University Hospital, CHLN E.P.E.. He is also the Director of Lisbon Cardiovascular Institute (ICVL) since 1999. He was President (2003-2015) of the Association for Research and Development of the Faculty of Medicine (AIDFM) in Lisbon, and the founder of the Cardiovascular Research Support Department (GAIC). He was the President and founder of the European Association of Echocardiography (2002-04), a registered branch of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), Chairman of the CPC (Congress Program Committee) of ESC (2008-10), and ESC President (2014-16). Since 2016 he is Immediate Past-President of the European Society of Cardiology, Chair of the European Heart Agency (ESC, Brussels), and integrates the Board of the European Heart for Children. He is also a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC), American College of Cardiology (FACC), American Society of Angiology (FASA), Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions (FSCAI) and the American Society of Echocardiography (FASE).

He was the Editor in Chief of the Portuguese Journal of Cardiology (1999-2015), and is currently Consulting Editor and Member of the Editorial of Board of several international peer-reviewed journals, and Expert Reviewer for the European Commission. Prof. Pinto has published over 500 papers and has presented over 1400 lectures/chairmanships at national and mostly international meetings.

Scientific Coordinator

Inês Zimbarra Cabrita, Ph.D

Inês graduated in the Lisbon School of Health Technology, where she obtained her Cardiopneumology BSc (Honours) degree. In 2005 she moved to London, where she stayed for 5 years attending first a Master of Science on Medical Imaging Ultrasound (2006) at the Faculty of Medicine Imperial College London and later a PhD in the field of Cardiology at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London (2014) with the thesis “The Heart in Sickle Cell Disease Role of Non-Invasive Cardiac Imaging by Advanced Echocardiography and Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Assessment of Myocardial Function”. Recently, in 2016, Inês obtained a 2 years Master focused on monitoring, quality and statistics in Scuola di Ricerca Clinica ed Epidemiologica,  Facoltà di Medicina e Chirurgia, University of Ferrara.

During 4 years (2006-2010), Inês worked as a Senior Researcher at the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College London, Hammersmith Campus, London, and was subsequently a Research Fellow at Sir John McMichael Centre, a Clinical Research Centre at Hammersmith Hospitals Trust where she developed her PhD project and worked as principal investigator and co-investigator in several Echocardiography and pulmonary hypertension research projects.

In 2012, Inês implemented the Cardiovascular Research Support Department (GAIC), at the Association for Research and Development of the Faculty of Medicine (AIDFM) Lisbon, Portugal and since then she is responsible for the Scientific Coordination of the Unit.

 

Scientific Advisors

 António Nunes Diogo, MD

Professor António Nunes Diogo has graduated from Lisbon Medical School in 1968 and has done the General Medical Training (General Internship) at Santa Maria University Hospital - CHLN E.P.E. in Lisbon, between 1968 and 1970. During his Cardiology training, Dr Diogo as attended the National Heart Hospital and Hammersmith Hospital in London, England and the Hospital Clínico San Carlos, Madrid, Spain. Since 1983, Dr Diogo has been a Cardiology Consultant at Santa Maria University Hospital - CHLN E.P.E. in Lisbon where he worked as Head of Staff at the CCU, from 2002 until 2009. Between 2010 and 2014 he was Director of the Cardiology I Department at CHLN, EPE..

 In addition, Dr Diogo is also an Assistant Professor at the Lisbon Medical School (since 1974) and a Visiting Professor at the Medical School of University of Beira Interior, Portugal, since its foundation in 2006. He is currently a full member of the Portuguese Society of Cardiology where he was the Past President of the Working Group of Acute Cardiac Care, a full member of the Portuguese Society of Intensive Care and a member of the European Society of Cardiology. Professor Diogo has published more than 120 papers in peer review journals, more than 150 abstracts and more than 15 book chapters.

 Francisca Patuleia Figueiras, PhD

Francisca obtained her Integrated Master’s degree (MEng) in Biomedical Engineering at the Faculty of Science and Technology - New University of Lisbon, in 2007. In 2008, after a 6 month internship at the Manipal Institute of Technology - Índia, she initiated her Ph.D. degree at the Pompeu Fabra University, in Barcelona. Along her Ph.D. she collaborated at the Molecular Imaging Centre (CRC-CIM-PRBB), where she participated in various pre-clinical and clinical neuroimaging studies. Also during her PhD, in 2010, she held a one-year trainee at the Psychiatric Imaging Group MRC-CSC, at Imperial College London.

After have completed her PhD in 2012, Francisca worked as post-doctoral researcher at the Laboratory of Psychiatric Neuroimaging, Clinics Hospital – University of São Paulo, Brazil, where she developed her post-doctoral project and gave support to the Center for Neuroscience Research (NAPNA-USP). Recently, in 2016, Francisca completed a 2 years Master focused on monitoring, quality and statistics at Scuola di Ricerca Clinica ed Epidemiologica, Facoltà di Medicina e Chirurgia, University of Ferrara. 

Since 2013, Francisca is working as Scientific Advisor of the Cardiovascular Research Support Department (GAIC), at the Association for Research and Development of the Faculty of Medicine (AIDFM) Lisbon, Portugal.

 

Core Team

Research Coordinator

Raquel Pires, PhD

Raquel obtained her Integrated Master’s degree (MSc) in Psychology at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences – University of Coimbra (FPCEUC), in 2009. In the same year, she initiated her PhD degree at FPCEUC, supported by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology. In 2011, the relevance of her research project was recognized by the Directorate-General of Health, which provided instrumental support to its national implementation since then. In 2015 her thesis was approved unanimously, with Distinction and Honors.

Along her PhD, Raquel collaborated at the Research Group Relationships, Development and Health – FPCEUC, and at the Psychological Intervention Unit of the Maternity Daniel de Matos – Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de Coimbra, EPE, where she took part in multidisciplinary teams, participated in several research projects in healthcare, and supported diverse clinical and research activities.

Since 2014, Raquel is working at the Cardiovascular Research Support Department (GAIC) as Study Coordinator in clinical studies. In addition, she is responsible for the cardiovascular research data management, and provides scientific advisory to the research team.

Study Coordinator & Quality Assistant

 Andreia Rocha, MSc

Andreia has as an academic background a Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Aveiro, which obtained in July 2013. In September of the same year she started her Master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Medicine through the “Training Programme in Pharmaceutical Medicine” at the University of Aveiro, which is a PharmaTrain centre of excellence.

During this Master, Andreia did a curricular internship, of four months, as Study Coordinator at Bluecinical and a curricular internship, of ten months, as Study Coordinator and Drug Safety Assistant at the Clinical Pharmacology Lab of the Instituto de Medicina Molecular.

Since 2015, Andreia Rocha is Study Coordinator at Cardiovascular Research Support Department (GAIC). She is also responsible for the maintenance of the Quality Management System and for all the Site Qualification & Feasibility processes.

Study Coordinator & Regulatory Affairs Assistant

 Susana Silva, MSc

Susana obtained her BSc. in Biomedical Engineering in the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (IPB) in 2013. In the same year, she made a summer course in Germany about "Designing Devices for Healthy Ageing - An International Challenge", and initiated the Master’s degree (MSc) in Biomedical Technology also in IPB. In 2015 she finished the MSc with her thesis on "Gaseous embolism in microchannels and Flow Focusing Technique in the Production of Microparticles PDMS" with partnership with the University of Extremadura in Badajoz, Spain.

Since 2016, Susana is working at the Cardiovascular Research Support Department (GAIC) as Study Coordinator and Regulatory Affairs Assistant, being responsible for the submission to Research Ethics Committee of all clinical studies at site level.
